Christian Chambers
SAFE SHELTER DIRECTOR
Christian Chambers is a father, husband, drummer, writer, and aspiring podcaster. Christian’s mission and passion is to bring joy and laughter in all sorts of situations because he believes that every day, you can always find a reason to smile and bring a smile to someone else. This belief is core in how Christian advocates for those who need advocating and creating connections that birth unique collaborations and forge ahead to provoke solutions to community and individual situations.
I was born in Manhattan, NY, but moved around a lot. From New Jersey to the east side of North Carolina, to even Jamaica, I have lived in many places that have offered many different experiences and perspectives. I moved around so much because my father was assisting in starting up different businesses involved with sleep medicine. I share this to illustrate that though I am not an Asheville native, I have been in this community since 2005, and out of all the places and perspectives, I consider this home. I have been working in the mental health and houseless field for over seven years (and I’m only 30). I won't dwell on all of my accomplishments because it’s not about that (but ask about me) 🙂 I have and will continue to invest my heart, passion, and energy in the betterment of this community.
My vision for my role in this community is unity, compassion, and respect. I know what it is like being houseless. I know what it's like being addicted. I know what it is like to be judged based on color, belief, and class. But most importantly, I know what it is like to be loved, accepted, and respected regardless of all of those things. That's my goal and my vision. To see a community come together regardless of all the differences to bring change. Not to shout people down from our ivory towers or cause children and others to stumble, but to speak to each other's hearts and work on change from the inside out with our biggest smiles and laughs.
I have worked at and worked closely with Homeward Bound WNC, Haywood St Congregational, RHA and RHA Jail Diversion, Sunrise Peer Support, Eliada Homes, The City of Asheville, Salvation Army, Appalachian Mountain Community Health Centers, The Asheville Housing Authority, The VA Hospital, October Road, Family Preservation Services, Anchor Collaborative, United Way, MAHEC, CPS, DSS, SSA and countless others. I’m invested. #PTGTBTG
